Fano Claims More Than 150 Federal Soldiers Captured in North Wollo as Amhara War Continues
Fighting across Amhara has not paused for Addis Ababa’s talking points. Pro-Fano sources say that on September 8, Fano fighters overran federal positions in the Wadla-Delanta-Dawunt area of North Wollo and took more than 150 Ethiopian National Defence Force soldiers prisoner. Shabelle Media Network reported the claim on September 11, citing those sources as also saying a military brigade was destroyed and that other government units withdrew from parts of the battlefield.
Those numbers remain contested. Shabelle noted that the claims could not be independently verified, and there was no immediate statement from the federal government in Addis Ababa or the ENDF confirming prisoners, brigade losses, or a withdrawal. In a war where both sides amplify battlefield wins and bury setbacks, prisoner counts from partisan channels should be treated as claims until corroborated by multiple independent outlets or official acknowledgment.
Even with soft attribution, the geography matters for Amhara readers. Wadla, Delanta, and Dawunt sit in North Wollo, a zone that has seen repeated Fano-ENDF clashes through 2026.
Broader weekly tallies from the Amhara Association of America covering late August into early September placed battle events across more than a dozen woreda administrations in eight Amhara zones, with civilian harm recorded in districts including Alamata, Mida-Woremo, and Efratana-Gidim. That pattern, not any single claimed haul of prisoners, is the running cost of Abiy Ahmed’s regime’s war on the region.
Addis Ababa has repeatedly framed operations in Amhara as restoring security. Rural communities living under artillery, drones, and shifting front lines hear a different ledger: contested casualty and capture figures, thin independent access for journalists, and a conflict that has lasted since April 2023 with no political settlement in sight. If Fano’s September 8 claim holds even partially, it undercuts palace narratives of a collapsing insurgency. If it does not, the underlying fact remains that North Wollo is still contested ground, not a pacified province.
