A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amharaamerica.org\/post\/dw-amharic-idps-sheltering-in-amhara-region-say-they-have-been-deprived-of-government-attention\">Deutsche Welle Amharic report<\/a>, carried in English by the Amhara Association of America on September 8, quotes residents in Harbu, Chagni, Jawi and Qalu describing hunger, malaria, and officials who tell them help is always \u201ccoming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indris Awel, who has lived integrated with the local community in Harbu for about six years, told DW Amharic it had been six months since his family received food relief from the state or charities. He said early arrivals once got roughly monthly support that prioritized children and pregnant women, then only promises. Rising living costs, he added, have made self-reliance nearly impossible.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/amhara-region-map-2.png\" alt=\"Map of Amhara Region\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Map of Amhara Region. Credit: Wikimedia Commons.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In Chagni, Harun Abdulkadir said IDPs had seen no state support for the entire year and now face a malaria outbreak on top of hunger. He described being told to lean on host communities rather than expect anything from the government, and said people were pleading for medical care as the epidemic spread. Mehamed Sayed, living outside the Jawi shelter and working day labor, said unregistered IDPs remain invisible to outdated distribution lists, and that South Wollo has been pressed to shrink the registered caseload even as families still live in tents.<\/p>\n<p>Amhara Region Disaster Risk and Management Commission deputy commissioner Serkaddis Atale told DW that responsibility for IDPs living with communities sits with local administrations under a cost-sharing arrangement, and that the regional commission would monitor disruptions. DW Amharic said it could not obtain comments from North Shewa, South Wollo, and North Wollo liaison offices, where more than 90,000 IDPs are said to reside.<\/p>\n<p>That gap between regional talking points and empty kitchens is the Amhara ledger under the federal government\u2019s war. Battlefield claims and palace logistics photo ops do not feed people displaced into Harbu or Chagni.
