{"id":8017,"date":"2014-03-27T06:11:57","date_gmt":"2014-03-27T10:11:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/?p=8017"},"modified":"2014-03-30T08:00:19","modified_gmt":"2014-03-30T12:00:19","slug":"khartoum-postpones-un-refugee-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/8017","title":{"rendered":"Khartoum postpones UN Refugee Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/images1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8022 alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/images1.jpg\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/images1.jpg 259w, http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/images1-220x164.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><\/a>The Sudanese government\u00a0has announced the suspension of a United Nations program aimed at providing training and other forms of assistance to thousands of refugees and local residents in eastern Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>The Sudanese Media Center issued a statement announcing that the Transitional Solutions Initiative (TSI) is currently on hold to allow for the evaluation of the project.<\/p>\n<p>Pontus Ohrstedt, a programme specialist at the UNDP, confirmed the program&#8217;s suspension to AFP, saying the postponement was necessary to enable a\u00a0joint assessment of the program.<\/p>\n<p>He further added that the purpose of the evaluation is to provide guidelines on the way forward in approximately two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>TSI\u00a0is a partnership between the United\u00a0 High\u00a0Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Development Program, the World Bank, the Governments of Netherlands and Norway as well as several Sudanese agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Reports indicate that\u00a0eastern Sudan has experienced an influx of refugees besides being home to large populations, mostly from Ethiopia and Eritrea. Pundits estimate that refugees in the region number over 74,000.<\/p>\n<p>According to a UNDP\u00a0report in 2012, the ongoing displacements in Sudan has resulted in a continued reliance on humanitarian assistance. This reportedly influenced the UNDP&#8217;s\u00a0decision to chose\u00a0the area to pilot its this project.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts say since its inception, the joint program has successfully enhanced sustainable livelihoods and self-reliance by reinforcing access to markets, resources and improving skills.
