{"id":7738,"date":"2014-03-10T07:06:55","date_gmt":"2014-03-10T11:06:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/?p=7738"},"modified":"2014-03-10T07:28:40","modified_gmt":"2014-03-10T11:28:40","slug":"burundi-and-zambia-discuss-extension-of-tanzania-zambia-railway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/7738","title":{"rendered":"Burundi and Zambia to extend Tanzania-Zambia Railway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Railway.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7744 alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Railway-300x151.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Railway-300x151.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Railway-220x110.jpg 220w, http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Railway.jpg 595w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The governments of Burundi and Zambia have disclosed plans of stretching the Tanzania-Zambia railway line to Burundi in order to support growth in bilateral trade between both nations.<\/p>\n<p>During an interview, Zambia&#8217;s Foreign Affairs Minister, Wylbur Simuusa, stated that deliberations between the two governments is at an advanced stage.<\/p>\n<p>He further relayed that a budget is being drawn up ad feasibility studies will be done into the project.<\/p>\n<p>The governments of Tanzania and Zambia own the 1,992 km railway line, which runs from Kapiri Mposhi town to Dar es Salaam Port in Zambia and Tanzania respectively.<\/p>\n<p>According to sources, the construction of the railway took place in the 70&#8217;s, reportedly with the support of the Chinese government.<\/p>\n<p>Reports indicate that the extension of the railway line &#8211; from Mpulungu port in northern Zambia to Bujumbura port in Burundi &#8211;\u00a0will be co-funded by both governments.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts say the initiative will certainly boost economic growth in several sectors of the Zambian economy by increasing trade with other states in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Reports indicate that export to other nations in the Great Lakes region &#8211; primarily by sea &#8211; is currently slow due to the limited ferry capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Officials have noted that both nations are actively pursuing this project because the absence of a direct trade link has developed unwanted business gaps.<\/p>\n<p>Many observers have, meanwhile, called for a rehabilitation of the current railway facility.<\/p>\n<p>Upon the completion of the extension, passengers, especially tourists, are expected to have a substitute mode of transportation.<\/p>\n<p>The railway line is expected to play a major role in the unification of the region.<\/p>\n<p>Observers say the extension will ease the pressure on Zambia&#8217;s road network, which has had to accommodate heavy haulage of automobiles for an extended period.
