{"id":7020,"date":"2014-01-21T10:37:48","date_gmt":"2014-01-21T15:37:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/?p=7020"},"modified":"2014-01-21T10:37:48","modified_gmt":"2014-01-21T15:37:48","slug":"al-shabab-blamed-for-explosion-near-jomo-kenyatta-international-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/7020","title":{"rendered":"al Shabab Blamed for Explosion near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DSC_0068.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7021 alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DSC_0068-300x191.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DSC_0068-300x191.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DSC_0068-220x140.jpg 220w, http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DSC_0068.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The Islamic extremist terrorist group, al Shabab, were behind a blast near the departure terminal of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport last week, according to Kenyan police officials.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier Kenya&#8217;s Inspector General of Police, David Kimaiyo, had noted that the blast was caused when a loose bulb fell into a bin in the Java Coffee Shop.<\/p>\n<p>However, on Monday, police officials revealed that al Shabab is responsible for the explosion, which the group had hoped would destroy Kenya&#8217;s main international airport.<\/p>\n<p>The terrorists are believed to have carefully scoped the venue before the failed attack last week Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>In a related development, Kenyan officials have arrested some suspects in connection with the incident.<\/p>\n<p>There are reports that between 3 &#8211; 6 unidentified Somali suspects were taken into custody in Nairobi&#8217;s Eastleigh district this past weekend over the explosion.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Star, the suspects all stayed in the home of the owner of a car, which has been implicated in the airport explosion.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Kenyan security officials uncovered a bullet-ridden Toyota Avensis car near the Sahuri Moyo shopping complex.<\/p>\n<p>The car allegedly contained the body of a deceased man, an undetonated improvised explosive device, three SIM cards and a cup from the Java Coffee Shop.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators have revealed that the abandoned car is believed to have been the same car the terrorists used to escape the airport after the failed explosion.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Chief Ndegwa Muhoro, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations says it currently unclear if the suspects in custody will be charged.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, pointed out that the owner of the Toyota Avensis car, who is considered one of the main suspects in the incident, is still at large.<\/p>\n<p>al Shabab carried out one of their most deadly attacks on Nairobi&#8217;s Westgate Mall last year, which left over 70 people dead.<\/p>\n<p>The group, who have promised to strike again, say the attacks are meant to coerce Kenyan authorities to withdraw from the African Union&#8217;s peace keeping mission in Somalia.<\/p>\n<p>Photo by eNCA\/Diana Neille: The international arrival terminal of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport cordoned after the explosion last week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Islamic extremist terrorist group, al Shabab, were behind a blast near the departure terminal of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport last week, according to Kenyan police officials.
