Amhara Fano National Movement chair Zemene Kassie fronted a late Sunday announcement in which seven Ethiopian armed and opposition groups said they had formed a joint alliance aimed at removing Abiy Ahmed’s government and putting an inclusive transitional administration in its place, according to reporting by Reuters<\/a>, Al Jazeera<\/a>, and Addis Standard \/ Kulu Media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The groups called the pact the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival, also reported as a Coalition for Survival and, in short form quoted by Al Jazeera, the Alliance for Survival. Zemene Kassie read the statement on Tigrai TV on the evening of September 20, Reuters and Addis Standard \/ Kulu Media reported, and versions of the declaration also appeared on social channels linked to some of the participating forces.<\/p>\n

Al Jazeera listed the seven members as the Amhara Fano National Movement, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front (Ugugumo), the Benishangul Peoples’ Liberation Movement, and the Gumuz Peoples’ Democratic Movement. Their statement said the alliance bears what it called a historic responsibility to overthrow Abiy Ahmed’s Regime and to form a transitional government that would work to end wars, protect rights, and open a national dialogue. The lineup is striking because Fano fought with federal forces against the TPLF during the 2020 to 2022 Tigray war, then turned against federal forces in Amhara from 2023 onward. Al Jazeera also noted that Amhara and Tigray both claim Western Tigray, which Amhara nationalists have administered since that war ended, so territorial friction remains a known risk inside any shared project.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Abiy Ahmed’s spokesperson Billene Seyoum told Reuters that alliance members had been collaborating “for a while” with financial backing from Eritrea. Eritrea’s information minister did not immediately respond, Reuters said, and Asmara has denied similar accusations before. Magnus Taylor of the International Crisis Group told Reuters the announcement would concern the federal government, while attempts to work together may be hampered by weak groups, long distances between them, and political differences.<\/p>\n

The same Monday, the Ethiopian Media Authority said news outlets must not use Tigrai TV as a source, Reuters reported, hours after the alliance statement aired on that channel. Separate reporting covers that suspension in more depth.<\/p>\n
