{"id":10936,"date":"2016-11-03T15:18:28","date_gmt":"2016-11-03T19:18:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/?p=10936"},"modified":"2016-11-03T15:46:22","modified_gmt":"2016-11-03T19:46:22","slug":"ethiopian-journalist-claims-the-government-wants-to-murder-him","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/10936","title":{"rendered":"Ethiopian Journalist Claims the Government Wants to Murder Him"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Source:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.uk\/oromia-media-network-executive-jawar-mohammed-believes-ethiopia-wants-him-dead-1589740\"> IBTimes UK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jawar Mohammed, political analyst and executive director of the Oromia Media Network (OMN), believes the Ethiopian government would kill him, should he return to his homeland.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am probably the most wanted person by the Ethiopian government and I think the government is willing to kill me if they have a chance,&#8221; Mohammed, who is based in Minneapolis, alleged during a phone interview with IBTimes UK. &#8220;Every time I appear on television, for the last few months, the government is all over the place condemning me and calling me a terrorist, an agitator and an enemy of the state.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In October, Ethiopia declared a six-month-long <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.uk\/eu-calls-dialogue-ethiopia-state-emergency-declared-1585693\" target=\"_blank\">state of emergency<\/a> following unrest in Oromia, and occasionally in Amhara.<\/p>\n<p>The response to the protests, labelled as the biggest anti-government unrest Ethiopia has witnessed in recent history, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2016\/10\/08\/ethiopia-independent-inquiry-needed-irreecha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">resulted in the death <\/a>of more than 500 people since November 2015, a figure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/dce3c340-8fe6-11e6-a72e-b428cb934b78\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the government later confirmed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammed is a strong supporter of the protests as he believes Ethiopia &#8220;needs a regime change and the installation of a government elected by the people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Under the state of emergency, Ethiopia banned certain media outlets, including OMN.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The government believes OMN and social media, Facebook particularly, are used to mobilise, agitate, coordinate people. The government sees this as a way to undermine their control over the population,&#8221; Mohammed claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammed believes it is too dangerous for him to go to Ethiopia right now.
