{"id":10883,"date":"2016-10-22T11:20:49","date_gmt":"2016-10-22T15:20:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/?p=10883"},"modified":"2016-10-22T11:20:49","modified_gmt":"2016-10-22T15:20:49","slug":"u-s-issues-another-travel-advisory-for-ethiopia-amid-state-of-emergency-violent-anti-government-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/10883","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Issues Another Travel Advisory for Ethiopia Amid State of Emergency, Violent Anti-Government Protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. government has issued a travel alert for Ethiopia amid widespread anti-government protests which have <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/passports\/en\/alertswarnings\/ethiopia-travel-warning.html\">led to the death of hundreds and the incarceration of thousands<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the U.S. State Department<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-ethiopia-usa-idUSKCN12L2PD\"> warned its citizens <\/a>against traveling to Ethiopia due to the unrest which led the Ethiopian government to declare a state of emergency on October 8, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p>US authorities advised American nationals to postpone all non-essential trips to Ethiopia because its embassy in the East African country cannot provide <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/10519\">consular services<\/a> as it usually does due to the unrest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;An October 15 decree states that individual may be arrested without a court order for activities they may otherwise consider routine, such as communication, consumption of media, attending gatherings, engaging with certain foreign governments or organizations, and violating curfews,&#8221; the State Department statement read.<\/p>\n<p>In August, the US Embassy in Ethiopia issued a travel advisory after confirming the death of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/10783\">US researcher <\/a>who was killed in the Oromia region by stone-throwing protesters who attacked the vehicle she was traveling in.<\/p>\n<p>The State Department had warned US citizens against traveling to areas of Ethiopia&#8217;s Amhara and Oromia regions, the hotbed of ongoing anti-government demonstrations, VOA reported.<\/p>\n<p>Ethiopian authorities have arrested thousands since the state of emergency went into effect.
