{"id":10636,"date":"2016-08-29T06:32:23","date_gmt":"2016-08-29T10:32:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/?p=10636"},"modified":"2016-08-29T06:32:23","modified_gmt":"2016-08-29T10:32:23","slug":"ethiopian-athlete-protests-against-government-after-winning-canadian-marathon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/10636","title":{"rendered":"Ethiopian Athlete Protests Against Government After Winning Canadian Marathon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A week after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/10621\">Feyisa Lilesa&#8217;s Rio Olympics protest<\/a>, another Ethiopian athlete has demonstrated against the Ethiopian government on the race tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Ebisa Ejigu, who won the SSQ Quebec City Marathon on Sunday, made <a href=\"http:\/\/runningmagazine.ca\/ebisa-ejigu-replicates-feyisa-lilesa-anti-political-protest\/\">an X-sign with his hands as he crossed the finish line<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The symbol is a sign of solidarity among the Oromo people, Ethiopia&#8217;s largest ethnic group, who have been protesting against the government since November 2015, AP reported.<\/p>\n<p>The Oromo protests reportedly began in reaction to a government plan to expand Addis Ababa into the Oromia region.<\/p>\n<p>Ejigu, who won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/live\/world-africa-36883328\">Quebec City Marathon<\/a> with a time of 2:30:40, is reportedly from Addis Ababa or surrounding areas, the Canadian Running Magazine reported.<\/p>\n<p>Ejigu has reportedly been living in Toronto since June, according to the BBC.
