{"id":10569,"date":"2016-08-01T12:23:39","date_gmt":"2016-08-01T16:23:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/?p=10569"},"modified":"2016-08-01T12:23:39","modified_gmt":"2016-08-01T16:23:39","slug":"thousands-of-amhara-people-protest-against-ethiopian-governments-policies-in-gondar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/10569","title":{"rendered":"Thousands of Amhara People Protest Against Ethiopian Government\u2019s Policies in Gondar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of people in Gondar, a city in Ethiopia&#8217;s Amhara region, gathered on Sunday to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/10519\">protest against a government decision<\/a> to place an Amhara district under the administrative jurisdiction of Tigray, a neighboring region.<\/p>\n<p>The protesters, who allegedly numbered over 10,000 also demanded that the country&#8217;s wealth is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.africanews.com\/2016\/07\/31\/half-a-million-protesters-call-for-a-regime-change-in-ethiopia\/\">distributed justly<\/a>, Africa News reported.<\/p>\n<p>The Amhara people are the second largest ethnic group in Ethiopia after the Oromo, who last year protested against a government land expansion policy.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/live\/world-africa-36685732\">Amhara protesters<\/a> carried flags, placards, and banners expressing support for other groups who recently took to the streets in Ethiopia, BBC reports.<\/p>\n<p>Images of the protests have since been shared on social media, Facebook and Twitter with hashtags #GonderProtests and #AmharaProtests.<\/p>\n<p>The protest, which has so far been peaceful, comes after violent unrest rocked Gondar last month.<\/p>\n<p>About a dozen people, including civilians and security forces, have been killed in the violent demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>The unrest began after demands that <a href=\"http:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/world\/world-news\/ethiopias-ethnic-amhara-stage-mass-anti-government-protest-2947164\/\">the Welkait community<\/a>, which was recently placed under the Tigray region, be returned to the Amhara region, Indian Express reported.<\/p>\n<p>The violent demonstrations led the U.S. government to issue a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/10519\">temporary travel ban<\/a> to Gondar.
