{"id":10135,"date":"2016-03-17T11:21:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-17T15:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/?p=10135"},"modified":"2016-03-17T11:21:00","modified_gmt":"2016-03-17T15:21:00","slug":"egypt-questions-ethiopia-over-construction-of-new-2000-mw-dam-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/10135","title":{"rendered":"Egypt Questions Ethiopia Over Construction of New 2000 MW Dam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/egypt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-10132 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/egypt-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"Water Resources and Irrigation minister Hossam Moghazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/egypt-300x205.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/egypt-220x150.jpg 220w, http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/egypt.jpg 594w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Egypt has questions for Ethiopia regarding the construction of a new <a href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201603170909.html\">2,000-megawatt dam<\/a> which was announced by Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn during a speech in parliament last week.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt\u2019s Irrigation Minister Hossam Moghazy said on Tuesday that Cairo needed more information concerning the dam, which is soon to be built.<\/p>\n<p>According to Moghazy, Cairo\u2019s request for details of the dam is not official but \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thecairopost.youm7.com\/news\/199267\/news\/egypt-has-friendly-communication-with-ethiopia-regarding-newly-announced-dam-min?\">friendly<\/a>.\u201d Egypt would like to know the location of the dam, and which particular river(s) it will feed off.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia have been negotiating over the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/10046\">Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam<\/a> (GERD) for over two years now.<\/p>\n<p>The GERD, which is scheduled to be completed in 2017, would be the largest hydro-electrical plant in Africa. The dam will generate about 6,000 megawatts of electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt\u2019s main concerns regarding Ethiopia\u2019s plan to constructing a new dam seems to be rooted in the suspicion that it will feed off the Blue Nile.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt, which has traditionally depended on the Nile for drinking water and agriculture, has expressed concerns regarding the construction of the GERD.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt fears its historical share of fresh water from the Nile would be decreased by the GERD. Upon completion, the dam would have a storage capacity of 74 billion cubic meters (14.5 billion gallons of water).<\/p>\n<p>Ethiopia has been working to allay the fears of Egypt and Sudan &#8211; both beneficiaries of the Nile.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the three countries hired two French consultancy firms to conduct studies on the possible impact of the GERD.<\/p>\n<p>The studies being carried out by BRL and Artelia is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Photo by Ahmed Ismail\/Anadolu Agency\/Getty Images<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Egypt has questions for Ethiopia regarding the construction of a new 2,000-megawatt dam which was announced by Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn during a speech in parliament last week.
