Most of the people killed \u201cwere shot in the back of the head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group said it has discovered evidence of beatings, illegal detention, torture and forced disappearances. About 56 people were reportedly shot or beaten, while 22 were torture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the killings occurred at night, after protests, while people were walking in the streets,\u201d said Kumlachew Dagne, HRC\u2019s vice chairman.<\/p>\n<p>A plan to extend Ethiopia&#8217;s capital city into Oromia, the largest region in Ethiopia, was widely protested against. The series of protests involving students and farmers has since stopped. However, according to the BBC, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/live\/world-africa-35783138\">protests are still ongoing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Human Rights Watch reports that at least 140 people have since been killed in the unrest. However, Ethiopian officials dismissed the report as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zegabi.com\/articles\/10051\">unauthentic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has apologized for the \u201cdeath and destruction\u201d that occurred during the protests.\u00a0 Last week, he said his government \u201cunreservedly apologizes to our people for what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Hailemariam said the protests were orchestrated by \u201canti-peace forces,\u201d he noted that it had raised \u201clegitimate questions\u201d worth answering.<\/p>\n<p>Photo: Zacharias Abubeker\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Ethiopian rights group on Monday accused the government of mass human rights abuses during the recently ended protests in the Oromia region.
