The two were also accused of recruiting members for the group believed to be based in Eritrea.<\/p>\n<p>Abraham is a teacher and activist, while Habtamu is a vocal opposition leader. Both men have remained in the custody of Ethiopia\u2019s police since last year when a federal high court <a href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201508242391.html\">acquitted them of all charges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth the documentary evidence and eye witness testimonies presented by the prosecution do not support its case beyond mere suspicion,\u201d the court\u2019s 44-page verdict read.<\/p>\n<p>According to the BBC, the men remained in detention <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/live\/world-africa-35518115\">while the prosecution prepared to appeal the court\u2019s ruling<\/a>. Despite their release, the prosecution is reportedly still pursuing the appeal.<\/p>\n<p>Ethiopia, lauded as the fastest growing African economy, has been criticized for using its controversial anti-terrorism law to shut down members of the opposition.<\/p>\n<p>Human Rights Watch has welcomed the news of Abraham and Habtamu\u2019s release although <a href=\"http:\/\/www.addisinsight.com\/2016\/02\/16\/habtamu-ayalew-and-abraham-solomon-released\/\">others they were charged with remained incarcerated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Felix Horne, an official with Human Rights Watch US, said it is \u201ca positive development that they were finally released, but it\u2019s hardly a victory for justice\u2026.They should never have been arrested in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reports indicate that Shiwas Assefa and Daniel Shibeshi, who have also been acquitted of terrorism charges, still remain incarcerated.<\/p>\n<p>Photo of Habtamu Ayalew (Twitter\/Liya B.
